1 --- 2 title: "New Pointless Project: OfficeGames" 3 date: 2012-02-28T00:00:00+00:00 4 draft: false 5 canonical_url: https://www.viget.com/articles/new-pointless-project-officegames/ 6 --- 7 8 *This post originally appeared onĀ [Pointless 9 Corp](http://pointlesscorp.com/).* 10 11 We're a competitive company, so for this year's [Pointless 12 Weekend](http://www.pointlesscorp.com/blog/2012-pointless-weekend-kicks-off), 13 the team in Viget's Durham office thought it'd be cool to put together a 14 simple app for keeping track of competitions around the office. 48 hours 15 later (give or take), we launched [OfficeGames](http://officegam.es/). 16 We're proud of this product, and plan to continue improving it in the 17 coming weeks. Some of the highlights for me: 18 19 ## Everyone Doing Everything 20 21 We're a highly collaborative company, but by and large, when it comes to 22 client work, everyone on the team has a fairly narrow role. 23 [Zachary](https://www.viget.com/about/team/zporter) writes Ruby code. 24 [Todd](https://www.viget.com/about/team/tmoy) does UX. 25 [Jeremy](https://www.viget.com/about/team/jfrank) focuses on the front 26 end. Not so for Pointless weekend -- UX, design, and development duties 27 were spread out across the entire team. Everyone had the repo checked 28 out and was committing code. 29 30 ## Responsive Design with Bootstrap 31 32 We used Twitter's [Bootstrap](https://twitter.github.com/bootstrap/) 33 framework to build our app. The result is a responsive design that 34 shines on the iPhone but holds up well on larger screens. I was 35 impressed with how quickly we were able to get a decent-looking site 36 together, and how well the framework held up once Jeremy and 37 [Doug](https://www.viget.com/about/team/davery) started implementing 38 some of [Mark](https://www.viget.com/about/team/msteinruck)'s design 39 ideas. 40 41 ## Rails as a Mature Framework 42 43 I was impressed with the way everything came together on the backend. It 44 seems to me that we're finally realizing the promise of the Rails 45 framework: common libraries that handle the application plumbing, while 46 still being fully customizable, so developers can quickly knock out the 47 boilerplate and then focus on the unique aspects of their applications. 48 We used [SimplestAuth](https://github.com/vigetlabs/simplest_auth), 49 [InheritedResources](https://github.com/josevalim/inherited_resources), 50 and [SimpleForm](https://github.com/plataformatec/simple_form) to great 51 effect. 52 53 Sign your office up for [OfficeGames](http://officegam.es/) and then add 54 your coworkers to start tracking scores. Let us know what you think!
