Or maybe you’re in it 221 for printed figurines, and your art supplies have taken over an entire drawer. 222 Either way, if you’re anything like us, these tools and parts slowly migrate 223 into the infamous “miscellaneous stuff” drawers. 224 225 Now imagine a professional setup for whatever work you’re doing: tools and 226 components neatly stored, always within reach, and arranged to fit your 227 workflow. Normally, you’d picture a big price tag and a system that’s heavy, 228 rigid, and not exactly adaptable when your workspace has to serve multiple 229 purposes. 230 231 Well, let us let you in on a not-so-secret solution that can turn that chaotic 232 workshop or desk into something closer to that professional setup — without the 233 cost or rigidity. It’s called “Gridfinity”. It’s not a product, it’s a standard 234 to which you 3D print components. 235 236 Over the past couple of years, Gridfinity has seen steady growth, with new 237 parts, extensions, and online generator platforms that make customizing and 3D 238 printing the components easier than ever. Used well, it can completely change 239 how you organize and work. 240 241 Let’s get into it! 242 243 [130] Back to Contents 244 245 Gridfinity: All You Need to Know 246 247 The Gridifinity Philosophy & Its Many Offshoots 248 249 Gridfinity helps you access your things, not store more Gridfinity helps you 250 access your things, not store more (Source: [131]ThaNoyesIV via Reddit) 251 252 Gridfinity was invented by Zack Freedman, who was once a professional freelance 253 prototyper, but now, he’s a full-time YouTuber who puts out super interesting 254 projects and tutorials mostly related to 3D printing and electronics.. He 255 designed and released the original modular 3D printed storage system in 2022, 256 and it has since become an open, community-driven project for organizing tools, 257 parts, and other workshop items. 258 259 There’s widespread adoption and many community contributions. For example, 260 Marcus Svensson launched the Gridfinity Generator, and ther are more than a 261 dozen Gridfinity-related generators, tool, or ecosystem projects. 262 263 Freedman’s original idea was to develop a 3D printed organizational system 264 that’s designed to meet a need, one which most people mistake as “small parts 265 storage”. Instead, it’s designed to help you finish projects, reset to clean 266 instantly, and reconfigure on the fly. 267 268 The defined philosophy for Gridifinity is that every item has a dedicated home 269 that: 270 271 1. Is within reach of where you’ll use it, 272 2. Is exposed and easy to grab, 273 3. Prevents accidents like spills and injuries, and 274 4. Is effortless to set up and super easy to put back or rearrange. 275 276 Image of: Now that's a clean workbench! (Source: [132]Chaabar via Reddit) 277 278 Think of your kitchen drawers. Are the teaspoons at the back of the bottom 279 drawer? Or are they front and center of the top drawer that’s nearby the coffee 280 machine? This is how Gridfinity is designed to work. 281 282 Because there’s no way to tell what tools, parts, or projects you have, 283 Freedman designed Gridfinity as a standard – in other words, a set of rules for 284 designing a component that will fit with any other Gridfinity component. He 285 published several example components when he [133]announced the system via 286 YouTube, but these are only examples, and he called upon the community to 287 improve his designs and come up with new ones. And boy, did the community 288 answer his call. 289 290 New component designs have been popping up all over the place, including for 291 spaces beyond the workbench like the bathroom and kitchen. So now, let’s get 292 into how this system actually works and how to apply it to your space! 293 294 [134] Back to Contents 295 296 Advertisement 297 Advertisement 298 Gridfinity: All You Need to Know 299 300 How To Get Your Grid On 301 302 The Gridfinity Specification The Gridfinity Specification (Source: [135] 303 willtree8 via Gridfinity) 304 305 As we mentioned, Gridfinity is a standard, not a product. A 306 Gridfinity-compliant storage solution fits within a baseplate made up of 42-mm 307 squares. So, every component has a width and length that is some multiple of 42 308 mm. For example, a 1 x 2 component is 42 x 84 mm, and a 4 x 5 component is 168 309 x 210 mm. 310 311 The height of each component follows a similar standard being a multiple of u, 312 equal to 7 mm. The smallest height is 2 u, or 14 mm, as the base that locks 313 into the grid is 7 mm (1u) and needs at least a 7-mm wall on top. This system 314 of multiples allows you to easily stack components on top of each other 315 securely (or if you’re just irked by uneven heights). 316 317 Freedman designed [136]two baseplate varieties for his initial release: a 318 weighted base and an open grid. The weighted base has space to glue magnets so 319 that [137]bins with magnetic bases can be secured in place. The open grid is 320 thin enough that bins with magnets would also be able to attract to a steel 321 drawer or surface. 322 323 The additional magnets and weights are optional, though. The design of the grid 324 interface is such that you only really need magnets or weights for particularly 325 top-heavy things like these [138]pick and tweezer racks. 326 327 Since the original release, others in the community have expanded the baseplate 328 options with designs such as a [139]lightweight magnetic version or a [140] 329 screw-together version to enable smaller grids to be securely connected 330 together. 331 332 [141] Back to Contents 333 334 Advertisement 335 Advertisement 336 Gridfinity: All You Need to Know 337 338 Gridfinity Generators & CAD 339 340 Image of: Gridfinity Generators & CAD Perplexing Labs’ Gridfinity Generator 341 (Source: Perplexing Labs) 342 343 These platforms that essentially do all the designing for you to your specs 344 have made the Gridfinity concept even more accessible to anyone with a 3D 345 printer, or without if you’d like to just upload the files it generates to a 3D 346 printing service like [142]Craftcloud. 347 348 They allow you to configure bins, dividers, socket trays, and even foam inserts 349 directly in the browser, then export STLs or parametric files. (Source: Che Simons 389 via All3DP) 390 391 Freedman printed his original setup using an Anycubic Kobra Max outfitted with 392 a Volcano-style 0.4-mm nozzle to give a 0.6-mm line width. Though, he hasn’t 393 specified a particular layer height or temperature. Not to worry, we have even 394 more pointers for you from our personal Gridfinity journey: 395 396 • Use a larger [153]nozzle, like 0.6 mm or 0.8 mm, for faster prints. 397 Gridfintiy models don’t need a lot of fine detail. 398 • Use hotter [154]temperatures for better layer adhesion. When working with 399 eSun PLA+ at 55 mm/s on a Creality CR-10 S with a 0.6-mm nozzle, 215 °C was 400 a good fit. 401 • Use sufficient [155]infill. Around 15-25% should suffice. This doesn’t 402 significantly increase print time because there’s not a large area within 403 the model that infill even applies to (given the models are generally 404 hollow), but it definitely helps with [156]warping. 405 • [157]Calibrate and recalibrate your X & Y E-steps until they’re perfect, or 406 you may lose your mind. There’s nothing more frustrating than your 407 components not fitting by a margin. 408 • Stick to 0.8- to 1-mm top and bottom thickness. It’s plenty, no need to use 409 more filament. 410 • Do not (and this is super important) put too much thought into how to 411 further optimize your layout before hitting print. You can easily get lost 412 in details and planning before you know it. Months will go by, and you’ve 413 printed nothing. The bins don’t use much plastic, so you can print new 414 ones. Stop thinking about it. 415 416 Luckily, Gridfinity has an active community, to not only help with getting the 417 prints right but also to offer component options that suit your needs. 418 419 [158] Back to Contents 420 421 Advertisement 422 Advertisement 423 Gridfinity: All You Need to Know 424 425 Scaling Your Grid & Buying in Bulk 426 427 Image of: Scaling Your Grid & Buying in Bulk Using a 3D printing service, like 428 Craftcloud, takes your Gridfinity system from personal to professional scale 429 (Source: Craftcloud) 430 431 Printing every bin is fun at first, but it doesn’t always scale. Purchasing 432 high-volume or specialty components and printing the rest has become a popular 433 balance. It also reflects the broader shift in Gridfinity from “personal 434 workshop hack” to a flexible, modular storage standard that could work in your 435 professional shop, school, or company. 436 437 While Gridfinity began as a purely open-source, maker-driven storage format, it 438 has since expanded into a small but fast-growing commercial ecosystem. Today, 439 you don’t have to print every bin, insert, or baseplate yourself — a number of 440 companies now produce injection-molded and CNC-cut components that complement 441 (and are fully compatible with) the original system (just search Gridfinity on 442 Amazon). 443 444 You’ll also find sellers on [159]Etsy to 3D print bins for you and you can even 445 upload your STL files to an affordable 3D printing service, like [160] 446 Craftcloud, and have hundreds printed and sent right to you. 447 448 Commercial bins typically focus on durability and consistency, and can often 449 support heavier loads, particularly for fasteners, sockets, or machine shop 450 tooling. Some vendors offer color-coded sets for high-visibility, while others 451 specialize in thin-wall bins designed to maximize density in drawers and 452 cabinets. 453 454 Compatibility now extends beyond the desktop workshop, of course. Magnetic 455 steel baseplates and modular cases make it easy to transport tools or hobby 456 materials, and many third-party organizers size their internal compartments 457 around the Gridfinity pitch. This opens the door to hybrid use with common 458 storage systems like shop drawers, Sortimo-style vehicle cases, and portable 459 field boxes. 460 461 Storage Systems Integration with Known Brands 462 463 Gridfinity modules increasingly coexist with established portable and workshop 464 storage systems. Many users adapt Gridfinity bins to fit into drawer cabinets, 465 [161] Packout-style toolboxes, Sortimo cases, and [162]Systainer organizers, 466 using printed adapters or commercially made steel baseplates. This hybrid 467 approach lets users keep small parts kitted in portable cases while maintaining 468 compatibility with bench-top baseplates and shop drawers. As a result, 469 Gridfinity is no longer confined to 3D printed trays, it has become a flexible 470 “inside layer” that provides structure and organization within a wide range of 471 storage platforms. 472 473 [163] Back to Contents 474 475 Advertisement 476 Advertisement 477 Gridfinity: All You Need to Know 478 479 Join the Gridfinity Community 480 481 Image of: Join the Gridfinity Community Customized drawer with Gridfinity from 482 Reddit user Jrj2211 (Source: Reddit) 483 484 When Freedman announced Gridfinity, a community sprang up almost overnight. As 485 the system was open source, new designs and improvements on Freedman’s 486 originals were posted to all of the usual places: Thingiverse, Printables, 487 MakerWorld, and so on. 488 489 If only all the parts had some kind of central library – a single page that had 490 a library of all the parts and the specifications for designing new parts. 491 Well, there is, sort of. [164]Gridfinity.xyz is a dedicated page for the 492 Gridfinity project, though the library sorely needs an update. It also contains 493 the best copy of the specifications we’ve been able to find. Other catalogs 494 have also cropped up on [165]GitHub to help organize all the organizers. 495 496 If you want more up-to-date discussions on Gridfinity, [166]Freedman’s # 497 gridfinity Discord channel has an ongoing discussion of all things Gridfinity. 498 You’ll have to agree to the terms and conditions of Freedman’s discord channel, 499 but that’s essentially being polite to other users. If you need any sort of 500 help with your Gridfinity, this is a good place to start! 501 502 If you’re more of a “front page of the internet” type of person, there’s also a 503 [167]Gridfinity Reddit page as another place to seek tips and query what has 504 already been designed. With all the community hype, you may be thinking that 505 Gridfinity is unprecedented. Sorry to say, this couldn’t be further from the 506 truth. 507 508 [168] Back to Contents 509 510 Advertisement 511 Advertisement 512 Gridfinity: All You Need to Know 513 514 Gridfinity Isn't the Only System 515 516 Image of: Gridfinity Isn't the Only System Alexandre Chappel's assortment 517 system (Source: [169]ALCH) 518 519 In fact, Gridfinity is based on Alexandre Chappel’s [170]assortment aystem, 520 which is a pay-to-access modular storage system with a closed ecosystem. The 521 system is very well thought out and very flexible, but as it’s not open source, 522 the designs are limited to those that Alexandre Chappel puts out. It does have 523 the advantage of lids functioning as tool trays if your workshop is dusty, for 524 example. Gridfinity tends to also have smaller bins than this system, which was 525 designed for woodworking. 526 527 There’s also the [171]Fast Print Modular Storage Drawer System, which could be 528 considered a vertical version of Gridfinity. While it’s not open source, it’s 529 free for personal use. We could easily imagine this supplementing a Gridfinity 530 layout, although there are already [172]drawer modules for Gridfinity… 531 532 Another, more vertical option is the [173]HIVE Modular Hex Drawers. These are 533 similar to the fast print drawers except that they’re hexagonal in shape if 534 you’re into that kind of thing. And there’s also a [174]desk honeycomb 535 organizer reminiscent of this design. 536 537 While all of these systems will get the job done, they do lack some 538 versatility. This is due to Gridfinity’s community following and open-source 539 nature. And at the end of the day, isn’t it more fun to organize with your 540 fellow makers? 541 542 [175] Back to Contents 543 544 Advertisement 545 Advertisement 546 Gridfinity: All You Need to Know 547 548 15 Ready-to-Print Gridfinity Essentials 549 550 Image of: Ready-to-print Gridfinity boxes by designer Mcclajb at MakerWorld 551 (Source: MakerWorld) 552 553 [176] Back to Contents 554 555 Advertisement 556 Gridfinity: All You Need to Know 557 558 Superlight Base Plat 559 560 Image of: Superlight Base Plat These are big savings! (Source: [177]KYZDesign 561 via MakerWorld) 562 563 The hidden key to the Gridfinity system is the baseplate. Unfortunately, they 564 can be quite big, using up lots of filament and time to print. If you want to 565 save hours and kilos of materials, you should try this model. As the name 566 suggests, these baseplates are designed to be superlight, reducing print time 567 and needed material. To achieve that, the designer has reduced the height of 568 the base, created smaller radii, and deleted the flares on the bottom. 569 570 These plates were designed to be printed with [178]PLA, but you can use 571 whatever material you like. A bin can be a single container holding nuts and bolts or a 599 multi-compartment container holding similar items. 600 601 You can also label these containers, making it easier to find the item you 602 need. Another great thing about these bins is that they can be stacked on top 603 of one another, allowing you to store items at different levels. If you run out 604 of space on the table, simply start building upwards. 605 606 Once you print these bins, you can place them on the baseplate and start using 607 them right away. However, if you’re concerned about accidentally lifting the 608 bin and spilling the contents, use a weighted baseplate that lets you anchor 609 these bins with screws or magnets. 610 611 • Who designed it?
