The 21 person in the ad had pointed their phone’s camera at a bowl of ramen, and the 22 AI result explained how to reproduce it at home. 23 24 How does it know? Because it’s trained on all the ramen recipes that multiple 25 recipe authors spent hours, weeks, years perfecting. Generative AI is a blender 26 chewing up other people’s hard work, outputting a sad mush that kind of 27 resembles what you’re looking for, but without any of the credibility or soul. 28 Magic. 29 30 I subscribe to a lot of recipe websites via RSS, and look forward to new posts 31 from some of my favourites like [16]Smitten Kitchen and [17]Meera Sodha because 32 I know they’re going to be excellent. I trust that the recipe is tried and 33 tested, and the result will be delicious. ChatGPT will give you an 34 approximation of a recipe made up from the average of lots of recipes, but they 35 lack the personality of each individual recipe, which will be slightly 36 different to reflect the experiences and tastes of the author. 37 38 There's a fair bit of talk about “[18]Google Zero” at the moment: the day when 39 website traffic referred from Google finally hits zero. If the AI search result 40 tells you everything you need, why would you ever visit the actual website? 41 42 Well, I want you to visit my website. I want you to read an article from a 43 search result, and then discover the other things I’ve written, the other 44 people I link to, and explore the weird themes I’ve got. I want some of you to 45 read my article then ask me to speak at your conferences. Many folks rely on ad 46 impressions to support the high-quality content they’re putting out for free. 47 48 I write the content on this website for people, not robots. I’m sharing my 49 opinions and experiences so that you might identify with them and learn from 50 them. I’m writing about things I care about because I like sharing and I like 51 teaching. I spend hours writing these posts and AI spends seconds summarising 52 them. 53 54 I'd much rather people read the whole thing, take it in, digest it and have 55 opinions right back at me. I love it when people connect with what I’m writing 56 (and sometimes they email me to tell me that, which is really delightful). 57 58 I don’t write these posts for VC-funded LLMs to come along and gobble up and 59 produce some shitty facsimile, or summarise what I’m saying with none of the 60 nuance or context on someone else's website. 61 62 This website is for humans, and LLMs are not welcome here. 63 64 [19] [20] Made with Eleventy 65 66 © Sophie Koonin 2025 67 68 [21] rss [22] mastodon [23] bluesky [24] email 69 70 References: 71 72 [1] https://localghost.dev/ 73 [9] https://localghost.dev/about 74 [10] https://localghost.dev/blog 75 [11] https://localghost.dev/talks 76 [12] https://localghost.dev/links 77 [13] https://localghost.dev/etc 78 [14] https://localghost.dev/tags/ai/ 79 [15] https://localghost.dev/tags/site/ 80 [16] https://smittenkitchen.com/ 81 [17] https://www.theguardian.com/profile/meera-sodha 82 [18] https://www.theverge.com/24167865/google-zero-search-crash-housefresh-ai-overviews-traffic-data-audience 83 [19] https://neocities.org/ 84 [20] http://11ty.dev/ 85 [21] https://localghost.dev/rss 86 [22] https://social.lol/@sophie 87 [23] https://bsky.app/profile/localghost.dev 88 [24] mailto:[email protected]
