The mainframe is on a floor made of a busy, 44 resistor-studded circuit board. The background is a halftoned RSS logo. Around 45 the rebel is a halo of light. 46 47 You should be using an RSS reader ([23]permalink) 48 49 No matter how hard we all wish it were otherwise, the sad fact is that there 50 aren't really individual solutions to systemic problems. For example: your 51 personal diligence in recycling will have no meaningful impact on the climate 52 emergency. 53 54 I get it. People write to me all the time, they say, "What can I change about 55 my life to fight enshittification, or, at the very least, to reduce the amount 56 of enshittification that I, personally, experience?" 57 58 It's frustrating, but my general answer is, "Join a movement. Get involved with 59 a union, with EFF, with the FSF. Tell your Congressional candidate to defend 60 Lina Khan from billionaire Dem donors who want her fired. Do something systemic 61 ." 62 63 There's very little you can do as a consumer. You're not going to shop your way 64 out of monopoly capitalism. Now that Amazon has destroyed most of the 65 brick-and-mortar and digital stores out of business, boycotting Amazon often 66 just means doing without. The collective action problem of leaving Twitter or 67 Facebook is so insurmountable that you end up stuck there, with a bunch of 68 people you love and rely on, who all love each other, all hate the platform, 69 but can't agree on a day and time to leave or a destination to leave for and so 70 end up stuck there. 71 72 I've been experiencing some challenging stuff in my personal life lately and 73 yesterday, I just found myself unable to deal with my usual podcast fare so I 74 tuned into the videos from the very last XOXO, in search of uplifting fare: 75 76 [24]https://www.youtube.com/@xoxofest 77 78 I found it. Talks by Dan Olson, Cabel Sasser, Ed Yong and many others, 79 especially Molly White: 80 81 [25]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTaeVVAvk-c 82 83 Molly's talk was so, so good, but when I got to her call to action, I found 84 myself pulling a bit of a face: 85 86 But the platforms do not exist without the people, and there are a lot more 87 of us than there are of them. The platforms have installed themselves in a 88 position of power, but they are also vulnerable… 89 90 Are the platforms really that vulnerable? The collective action problem is so 91 hard, the switching costs are so high – maybe the fact that "there's a lot more 92 of us than there are of them" is a bug, not a feature. The more of us there 93 are, the thornier our collective action problem and the higher the switching 94 costs, after all. 95 96 And then I had a realization: the conduit through which I experience Molly's 97 excellent work is totally enshittification-proof, and the more I use it, the 98 easier it is for everyone to be less enshittified. 99 100 This conduit is anti-lock-in, it works for nearly the whole internet. It is 101 surveillance-resistant, far more accessible than the web or any mobile app 102 interface. It is my secret super-power. 103 104 It's RSS. 105 106 RSS (one of those ancient internet acronyms with multiple definitions, 107 including, but not limited to, "Really Simple Syndication") is an invisible, 108 automatic way for internet-connected systems to public "feeds." For example, 109 rather than reloading the Wired homepage every day and trying to figure out 110 which stories are new (their layout makes this very hard to do!), you can just 111 sign up for Wired's RSS feed, and use an RSS reader to monitor the site and 112 preview new stories the moment they're published. Wired pushes about 600 words 113 from each article into that feed, stripped of the usual stuff that makes Wired 114 nearly impossible to read: no 20-second delay subscription pop-up, text in a 115 font and size of your choosing. You can follow Wired's feed without any 116 cookies, and Wired gets no information about which of its stories you read. 117 Wired doesn't even get to know that you're monitoring its feed. 118 119 I don't mean to pick on Wired here. This goes for every news source I follow – 120 from CNN to the New York Times. But RSS isn't just good for the news! It's good 121 for everything. Your friends' blogs? Every blogging platform emits an RSS feed 122 by default. You can follow every one of them in your reader. 123 124 Not just blogs. Do you follow a bunch of substackers or other newsletters? 125 They've all got RSS feeds. You can read those newsletters without ever 126 registering in the analytics of the platforms that host them. The text shows up 127 in black and white (not the sadistic, 8-point, 80% grey-on-white type these 128 things all default to). It is always delivered, without any risk of your email 129 provider misclassifying an update as spam: 130 131 [26]https://pluralistic.net/2021/10/10/dead-letters/ 132 133 Did you know that, by default, your email sends information to mailing list 134 platforms about your reading activity? The platform gets to know if you opened 135 the message, and often how far along you've read in it. On top of that, they 136 get all the private information your browser or app leaks about you, including 137 your location. This is unbelievably gross, and you get to bypass all of it, 138 just by reading in RSS. 139 140 Are your friends too pithy for a newsletter, preferring to quip on social 141 media? Unfortunately, it's pretty hard to get an RSS feed from Insta/FB/ 142 Twitter, but all those new ones that have popped up? They all have feeds. You 143 can follow any Mastodon account (which means you can follow any Threads 144 account) via RSS. Same for Bluesky. That also goes for older platforms, like 145 Tumblr and Medium. There's RSS for Hacker News, and there's a sub-feed for the 146 comments on every story. You can get RSS feeds for the Fedex, UPS and USPS 147 parcels you're awaiting, too. 148 149 Your local politician's website probably has an RSS feed. Ditto your state and 150 national reps. There's an RSS feed for each federal agency (the FCC has a great 151 blog!). 152 153 Your RSS reader lets you put all these feeds into folders if you want. You can 154 even create automatic folders, based on keywords, or even things like 155 "infrequently updated sites" (I follow a bunch of people via RSS who only 156 update a couple times per year – cough, Danny O'Brien, cough – and never miss a 157 post). 158 159 Your RSS reader doesn't (necessarily) have an algorithm. By default, you'll get 160 everything as it appears, in reverse-chronological order. 161 162 Does that remind you of anything? Right: this is how social media used to work, 163 before it was enshittified. You can single-handedly disenshittify your 164 experience of virtually the entire web, just by switching to RSS, traveling 165 back in time to the days when Facebook and Twitter were more interested in 166 showing you the things you asked to see, rather than the ads and boosted 167 content someone else would pay to cram into your eyeballs. 168 169 Now, you sign up to so many feeds that you're feeling overwhelmed and you want 170 an algorithm to prioritize posts – or recommend content. Lots of RSS readers 171 have some kind of algorithm and recommendation system (I use News, which offers 172 both, though I don't use them – I like the glorious higgeldy-piggeldy of the 173 undifferentiated firehose feed). 174 175 But you control the algorithm, you control the recommendations. And if a new 176 RSS reader pops up with an algorithm you're dying to try, you can export all 177 the feeds you follow with a single click, which will generate an OPML file. 178 Then, with one click, you can import that OPML file into any other RSS reader 179 in existence and all your feeds will be seamlessly migrated there. You can 180 delete your old account, or you can even use different readers for different 181 purposes. 182 183 You can access RSS in a browser or in an app on your phone (most RSS readers 184 have an app), and they'll sync up, so a story you mark to read later on your 185 phone will be waiting for you the next time you load up your reader in a 186 browser tab, and you won't see the same stories twice (unless you want to, in 187 which case you can mark them as unread). 188 189 RSS basically works like social media should work. Using RSS is a chance to 190 visit a utopian future in which the platforms have no power, and all power is 191 vested in publishers, who get to decide what to publish, and in readers, who 192 have total control over what they read and how, without leaking any personal 193 information through the simple act of reading. 194 195 And here's the best part: every time you use RSS, you bring that world closer 196 into being! The collective action problem that the publishers and friends and 197 politicians and businesses you care about is caused by the fact that everyone 198 they want to reach is on a platform, so if they leave the platform, they'll 199 lose that community. But the more people who use RSS to follow them, the less 200 they'll depend on the platform. 201 202 Unlike those largely useless, performative boycotts of widely used platforms, 203 switching to RSS doesn't require that you give anything up. Not only does 204 switching to RSS let you continue to follow all the newsletters, webpages and 205 social media accounts you're following now, it makes doing so better: more 206 private, more accessible, and less enshittified. 207 208 Switching to RSS lets you experience just the good parts of the enshitternet, 209 but that experience is delivered in manner that the new, good internet we're 210 all dying for. 211 212 My own newsletter is delivered in fulltext via RSS. If you're reading this as a 213 Mastodon or Twitter thread, on Tumblr or on Medium, or via email, you can get 214 it by RSS instead: 215 216 [27]https://pluralistic.net/feed/ 217 218 Don't worry about which RSS reader you start with. It literally doesn't matter. 219 Remember, you can switch readers with two clicks and take all the feeds you've 220 subscribed to with you! If you want a recommendation, I have nothing but praise 221 for Newsblur, which I've been paying $2/month for since 2011 (!): 222 223 [28]https://newsblur.com/ 224 225 Subscribing to feeds is super-easy, too: the links for RSS feeds are invisibly 226 embedded in web-pages. Just paste the URL of a web-page into your RSS reader's 227 "add feed" box and it'll automagically figure out where the feed lives and add 228 it to your subscriptions. 229 230 It's still true that the new, good internet will require a movement to overcome 231 the collective action problems and the legal barriers to disenshittifying 232 things. Almost nothing you do as an individual is going to make a difference. 233 234 But using RSS will! Using RSS to follow the stuff that matters to you will have 235 an immediate, profoundly beneficial impact on your own digital life – and it 236 will appreciably, irreversibly nudge the whole internet towards a better state. 237 238 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 239 240 Hey look at this ([29]permalink) 241 242 [heylookatt] 243 * You Can't Make Friends With The Rockstars [30]https://www.wheresyoured.at/ 244 rockstars/ 245 246 • Tom Lehrer Discovers Australia (And Vice Versa) [31]https:// 247 taylorjessen.blogspot.com/2024/10/tom-lehrer-tom-lehrer-discovers.html 248 249 • Conceptual models of space colonization [32]https://www.antipope.org/ 250 charlie/blog-static/2024/10/conceptual-models-of-space-col.html 251 252 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 253 254 255 A Wayback Machine banner. 256 257 This day in history ([33]permalink) 258 259 #20yrsago Sony bullies Retropod off the net [34]https://web.archive.org/web/ 260 20041018040446/http://www.retropod.com/ 261 262 #15yrsago This Side of Jordan – Violent jazz age novel by Charles M Schulz’s 263 son Monte [35]https://memex.craphound.com/2009/10/16/ 264 this-side-of-jordan-violent-jazz-age-novel-by-charles-m-schulzs-son-monte/ 265 266 #10yrsago FBI chief demands an end to cellphone security [36]https:// 267 www.nytimes.com/2014/10/17/us/politics/ 268 fbi-director-in-policy-speech-calls-dark-devices-hindrance-to-crime-solving.html 269 270 #10yrsago Please, Disney: put back John’s grandad’s Haunted Mansion tombstone 271 [37]https://thedisneyblog.com/2014/10/16/ 272 petition-to-return-a-lost-tombstone-to-the-haunted-mansion/ 273 274 #10yrsago How Microsoft hacked trademark law to let it secretly seize whole 275 businesses [38]https://www.wired.com/2014/10/microsoft-pinkerton/ 276 277 #10yrsago If you think you’ve anonymized a data set, you’re probably wrong [39] 278 https://web.archive.org/web/20141014172827/http://research.neustar.biz/2014/09/ 279 15/riding-with-the-stars-passenger-privacy-in-the-nyc-taxicab-dataset/ 280 281 #10yrsago The lost cyber-crayolas of the mid-1990s [40]https:// 282 memex.craphound.com/2014/10/16/the-lost-cyber-crayolas-of-the-mid-1990s/ 283 284 #5yrsago “The People’s Money”: A crisp, simple, thorough explanation of how 285 government spending is paid for [41]https://neweconomicperspectives.org/2019/10 286 /the-peoples-money-part-1.html 287 288 #5yrsago What it’s like to have Apple rip off your successful Mac app [42] 289 https://memex.craphound.com/2019/10/16/ 290 what-its-like-to-have-apple-rip-off-your-successful-mac-app/ 291 292 #5yrsago Blizzard suspends college gamers from competitive play after they 293 display “Free Hong Kong” poster [43]https://www.vice.com/en/article/ 294 three-college-hearthstone-protesters-banned-for-six-months/ 295 296 #5yrsago Terrified of bad press after its China capitulation, Blizzard cancels 297 NYC Overwatch event [44]https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-10-15/ 298 blizzard-cancels-overwatch-event-as-it-tries-to-contain-backlash 299 300 #5yrsago A San Diego Republican operator ran a massive, multimillion-dollar 301 Facebook scam that targeted boomers [45]https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ 302 craigsilverman/facebook-subscription-trap-free-trial-scam-ads-inc 303 304 #5yrsago Britain’s unbelievably stupid, dangerous porn “age verification” 305 scheme is totally dead [46]https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2019/10/ 306 uk-government-abandons-planned-porn-age-verification-scheme/ 307 308 #5yrsago Not only is Google’s auto-delete good for privacy, it’s also good news 309 for competition [47]https://memex.craphound.com/2019/10/16/ 310 not-only-is-googles-auto-delete-good-for-privacy-its-also-good-news-for-competition 311 / 312 313 #5yrsago Edward Snowden on the global war on encryption: “This is our new 314 battleground” [48]https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/oct/15/ 315 encryption-lose-privacy-us-uk-australia-facebook 316 317 #5yrsago In Kansas’s poor, sick places, hospitals and debt collectors send the 318 ailing to debtor’s prison [49]https://features.propublica.org/medical-debt/ 319 when-medical-debt-collectors-decide-who-gets-arrested-coffeyville-kansas 320 321 #5yrsago Want a ride in a Lyft?
