Haupt Garden at the Smithsonian Castle Cathy Landry / Shutterstock 65 66 How much did the temperature drop around D.C. in 24 hours? 67 68 The District experienced a 51-degree swing, from 84 degrees and sunny one day, 69 to 33 degrees with freezing rain and snow the next! 70 71 The remarkable drop in temperature is the largest ever recorded within 24 hours 72 in Washington, D.C., with records dating back to 1929. 73 74 The only ever similar temperature drop on record in D.C. was nearly a century 75 ago, in 1934, when temperatures went from 65 degrees to 14 degrees in a single 76 day. 77 78 dc cherry blossoms second stagedc cherry blossoms second stage Dusan Ilic / 79 Getty Images Signature 80 81 Did the record-breaking temperature ruin any of the District’s blooms or 82 blossoms? 83 84 Washington, D.C., is home to many gorgeous and iconic blooms that bring the 85 city to life every spring, but not all of them bloom at the same time, which 86 means that one bad storm is highly unlikely to impact all of the blooms and 87 blossoms around the District. 88 89 That being said, two particular blooms were at the highest risk of impact from 90 the historic temperature drop and subsequent weather: 91 92 • The Okame cherry blossoms were just about at their peak bloom before the 93 temperature shift, which means that most of their flowers likely fell due 94 to shock from the weather. 95 • The magnolia trees around the District, which were just about to start 96 flowering, seemingly made it through the day unscathed. [23]According to 97 the Smithsonian Garden, the magnolia trees around the Enid A.
