[54]Editors have highlighted the following attributes while 84 ensuring the content's credibility: 85 86 fact-checked 87 88 trusted source 89 90 proofread 91 92 We are wasting up to 20% of our time on computer problems, says study 93 94 by [55]University of Copenhagen 95 96 computer Credit: Unsplash/CC0 Public Domain 97 98 Even though our computers are now better than 15 years ago, they still 99 malfunction 11%–20% of the time, a new study from the University of Copenhagen 100 and Roskilde University concludes. The researchers behind the study therefore 101 find that there are major gains to be achieved for society by rethinking the 102 systems and involving users more in their development. 103 104 An endlessly rotating beach ball, a program that [56]crashes without saving 105 data or systems that require illogical procedures or simply do not work: 106 Unfortunately, struggling with computers is still a familiar situation for most 107 of us. Tearing your hair out over computers that do not work remains very 108 common among users, according to new Danish research. 109 110 In fact, so much that on average, we waste 11%–20% of our time in front of our 111 computers on systems that do not work or that are so difficult to understand 112 that we cannot perform the task we want to. And this is far from being good 113 enough, says Professor Kasper Hornbæk, one of the researchers behind the study. 114 115 "It's incredible that the figure is so high. However, most people experience 116 frustration when using computers and can tell a horror story about an important 117 PowerPoint presentation that was not saved or a system that crashed at a 118 critical moment. Everyone knows that it is difficult to create IT systems that 119 match people's needs, but the figure should be much lower, and one thing that 120 it shows is that [57]ordinary people aren't involved enough when the systems 121 are developed," he says. 122 123 Professor Morten Hertzum, the other researcher behind the study, emphasizes 124 that most frustrations are experienced in connection with the performance of 125 completely ordinary tasks. 126 127 "The frustrations are not due to people using their computers for something 128 highly advanced, but because they experience problems in their performance of 129 everyday tasks. This makes it easier to involve users in identifying problems. 130 But it also means that problems that are not identified and solved will 131 probably frustrate a large number of users," says Morten Hertzum. 132 133 [INS::INS] 134 135 The problems are only too recognizable 136 137 To examine this issue, the researchers have been assisted by 234 participants 138 who spend between six and eight hours in front of a computer in their 139 day-to-day work. 140 141 During one hour, the researchers told them to report the situations in which 142 the computer would not work properly, or where the participants were frustrated 143 about not being able to perform the task they wanted. 144 145 The problems most often experienced by the participants included: "the system 146 was slow," "the system froze temporarily," "the system crashed," "it is 147 difficult to find things." The participants had backgrounds such as student, 148 accountant, consultant, but several of them actually worked in the IT industry. 149 150 "A number of the participants in the survey were IT professionals, while most 151 of the other participants were highly competent IT and computer users. 152 Nevertheless, they encountered these problems, and it turns out that this 153 involves some fundamental functions," says Kasper Hornbæk. 154 155 The participants in the survey also responded that 84% of the episodes had 156 occurred before and that 87% of the episodes could happen again. And, according 157 to Kasper Hornbæk, we are having the same fundamental problems today that we 158 had 15–20 years ago. 159 160 "The two biggest categories of problems are still about insufficient 161 performance and lack of user-friendliness," he says. 162 163 Morten Hertzum adds, "Our technology can do more today, and it has also become 164 better, but at the same time, we expect more from it. Even though downloads are 165 faster now, they are often still experienced as frustratingly slow. " 166 167 88% use a computer at work 168 169 According to Statistics Denmark, 88% of Danes used computers, laptops, 170 smartphones, tablets or other mobile devices at work in 2018. In this context, 171 the new study indicates that a half to a whole day of a normal working week may 172 be wasted on computer problems. 173 174 "There is a lot of productivity lost in workplaces throughout Denmark because 175 people are unable to perform their ordinary work because the computer is not 176 running as it should. It also causes a lot of frustrations for the individual 177 user," says Kasper Hornbæk. 178 179 This means that there are major benefits to be gained for society if we 180 experienced fewer problems in front of our computers. According to Kasper 181 Hornbæk, the gains can, for example, be achieved if more resources are invested 182 in rethinking how faults are presented to us on the computer. 183 184 "Part of the solution may be to shield us from knowing that the computer is 185 working to solve a problem. In reality, there is no reason why we need to look 186 at an incomprehensible box with commands or a frozen computer. The [58]computer 187 could easily solve the problems without displaying this, while it provided a 188 back-up version of the system for us, so that we could continue to work with 189 our tasks undisturbed," says Kasper Hornbæk. 190 191 At the same time, IT developers should involve the users even more when 192 designing the systems to make them as easy to use—and understand—as possible, 193 because according to the researcher, there are no poor IT users, only poor 194 systems. 195 196 "When we're all surrounded by IT systems that we're cursing, it's very healthy 197 to ascertain that it's probably not the [59]users that are the problem, but 198 those who make the systems. The study clearly shows that there is still much 199 room for improvement, and we therefore hope that it can create more focus on 200 making more user-friendly systems in the future," concludes Kasper Hornbæk. 201 202 More information: Morten Hertzum et al, Frustration: Still a Common User 203 Experience, ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction (2023).
