This year it’s a dark green one. I don’t use the bullet journal system 16 at all, but I like the paper and format enough to customise this notebook for 17 my own purposes. 18 19 A new year means moving into a new planner. I take the chance while moving in 20 to review the pages in my planner that didn’t get used or that need be copied 21 into the new notebook, and decide which ones need to be copied and which ones 22 can stay behind or be migrated to my Obsidian app. 23 24 Planner Setup 25 26 I plan my year in four thirteen week quarters. You can read about it more [5] 27 here. 28 29 The Q1 plan starts at page 76 and ends at page 79. From page 80 to page 105 are 30 the first 13 weeks of double spreads – on the left side is for the week, where 31 I write down the 7 days of the week with their dates, and on the right side is 32 where my weekly plan and goals go. 33 34 I use the 7 days a week planner part to map out my exercise plan (I run, swim 35 and lift weights), note events that I need to take into account in my weekly 36 plan (travel, meetings with friends, things that take large blocks of time or 37 require preparation). I usually don’t fill the days here – I have a google 38 calendar for my day to day planning and reminders, both at work and at home – 39 but it is still useful for me to get an overview of the week ahead. 40 41 The interesting part is the right side of every weekly spread, where I plan my 42 tasks for the week. They are divided into headings and groups for ease of 43 reference, plus room for free text planning. 44 45 Every week has a detailed fitness plan – but not too detailed so that I lose 46 too much flexibility. I just note that I want to get in 4-5 runs, 2 swims, 2 47 lifting sessions, 2 plyo sessions and however many stretching sessions. 48 49 I then note the “connections” I plan to invest time and effort into. This is 50 just a list of friends that I want to call, meet up in person or zoom with. 51 Texting doesn’t count. Yes, I have to set this as a goal or life just gets in 52 the way and it doesn’t happen. I neglected to do this in last year’s Q4 and I 53 really felt it. Everyone is busy and maintaining friendships requires planning, 54 time and effort – and it’s WORTH it. So if it’s worth it, I need to treat it 55 with the same seriousness as anything else that’s important to me. 56 57 Next comes the reading section, with my reading goals for the week. Again, if I 58 don’t set these, my reading tends to be neglected in favour of less nourishing 59 pastimes. 60 61 Then come “tickers” for quarter specific goals. I won’t get into these as they 62 are personal, but if you can’t measure it – even in the simplest of ways – then 63 it’s not really a goal and you won’t do it. “Yearly Themes” are for people who 64 stopped publishing on their YouTube channel and recording their podcasts. I 65 have learned again and again, especially during the latter part of 2025, that 66 if I don’t set measurable goals, I just let myself off the hook and the result 67 isn’t pretty. 68 69 One goal for Q1 that I am willing to share is getting off of social media 70 again, and focusing on finishing a challenging technical certification for 71 work. To get it done I need time, and cutting out Instagram, Facebook and 72 YouTube gives me 6 hours a week without too much effort. 73 74 Q1 2026 Plan 75 76 I had two wobbly quarters of planning in 2025. It was a rough year in general – 77 war, upheaval at work, more war, more upheaval at work, some personal stuff, 78 lots of travel – which meant that my routine and some of my habits took a 79 serious hit. I stopped reading for a while. I stopped journaling for a while 80 and then struggled to get back. By the end of the year I was back on track with 81 both habits, but still, 2025 was a wake up call that my quarterly plans need 82 some rethinking. 83 84 This year’s Q1 plan is a result of that thinking. It’s still divided into areas 85 of focus, but the areas have changed a bit and have become narrower. They are: 86 Health and Fitness, Professional Development, Reading, Conversations, 87 Sketching, Blogging, Sleep, Journaling, Planning/Productivity, Money, 88 Decluttering, Mental Health, Other. 89 90 Each one has a detailed, achievable set of goals that are broken down by week. 91 The idea is that I can reference these much more often, and it’s easier to copy 92 them into my weekly task plan when the time comes. It took me much longer to 93 make this plan, but as I’m closing week 1 of this quarter (I started on Sunday 94 the 28th of December) it’s already hugely paying off. 95 96 Setting goals is hard. It’s easier to not set them, or to be vague and then 97 give up – most of the time before you’ve even started. You want to read more? 98 Set a measurable goal, and if you’re worried you might have a hard time with 99 it, make it tiered. For example: one or two easy books a month if you haven’t 100 read for years. Stretch to one easy book and one more difficult book. Then 101 stretch for more – but track everything on daily or weekly basis. In case of my 102 reading for example, I aim for two chapters a day, or around 30-40 pages a day. 103 Some days I read more, some days I read less, but that’s the average. It comes 104 out to around 4 books a month. 105 106 The Rest of the Planner 107 108 What about pages 1-75? Well they’re for general lists, trackers, brainstorming 109 my quarterly plans, etc. 110 111 I have a list of “Unread Books on My Kindle” – currently containing 28 books. 112 The point is to get me reading the books that I buy, and not just buying them 113 (BTW – I use a Kindle but I’ve been buying books on Kobo for over a year). 114 115 “Mindful Consuming” is a list of movies and series that I want to watch – 116 things that are worth taking the time to view, instead of mindlessly grazing on 117 algorithmically recommended slop. 118 119 “Conversations, Not Connections” is a list of friends that I want to make sure 120 I actually touch base with, instead of just liking their posts or sending texts 121 every once in a while. The list is there to encourage intention and not because 122 I might forget a friend. Look at it as sort of a contract or formal commitment. 123 124 “List of Courses that I’ve Enrolled to” – if you’re like me, then you’ve 125 enrolled to more than one online course. The point is to track them all, and 126 make sure that I take the time to actually complete them. Until now I have had 127 a very low success rate, but the change in my plan for Q1 means that I’ve 128 started more rigorously to carve out time for my courses, which means that I’m 129 actually starting to make progress with this. The other goal of this list is to 130 make sure that I don’t enrol to another course, because I’ve got enough of 131 those right now. 132 133 “Punch List/Brain Dump” – is just a running list of things that I want to get 134 to. It gets formalised later into either my daily to do, my weekly or quarterly 135 plan, or it gets deleted. 136 137 “Things from Abroad” – a running list of shopping items that I’m waiting to 138 receive. Serves a dual purpose – to help me keep track of what I ordered, and 139 to stop me from ordering more stuff. With prices soaring lately, this has 140 become more important than ever. 141 142 “Q1 Prep” – three pages of just freeform planning and brainstorming before I 143 came up with the 2026 Q1 plan. I plan on creating similar pages for the rest of 144 the three quarters of the year. 145 146 That’s it. There are no stickers in my planner, no highlighters, illustrations 147 and such. It’s a practical tool for me. I won’t photograph it for the blog or 148 social media because it’s so personal, and that’s its job – to work for me, not 149 to generate content or likes. It isn’t pretty, but boy is it functional. I 150 reference it at least one or two time a day every day. From it stems my daily 151 to-do list, my weekly review, my long and short term plans. It’s an investment 152 that’s paid dividends over the years, and from what I can tell my new format 153 promises to pay me back even more. 154 155 I hope this helps you set up a similar planning system of your own. I recommend 156 creating one that fits your needs, rather than taking one that someone else 157 built for their needs. There’s nothing more personal than a person’s planner 158 and a person’s journal. Make it your own. 159 160 Have a great planning year! 161 162 Share this: 163 164 • [6] Click to share on X (Opens in new window) X 165 • [7] Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook 166 • 167 168 Like Loading... 169 170 Related 171 172 [8]journaling, [9]Life, [10]Notebooks, [11]Planners, [12]Productivity, [13]What 173 I’m Using[14]writingatlarge[15]bullet journal, [16]fitness planning, [17] 174 journaling, [18]organizing, [19]planner, [20]planning, [21]reading-goals, [22] 175 to-do lists, [23]weekly planner, [24]weekly spread[25]3 comments 176 177 Post navigation 178 179 [26]Happy New Year! 2026 Edition 180 181 3 thoughts on “My 2026 Q1 Planning and Moving to a New Planner” 182 183 1.
