I can’t be the only 41 one who’s noticed that late-career DHH is a lot like late-career Al Pacino, who 42 seems to think that the most effective way to get a message across is by 43 YELLING.) 44 45 The keynote cannot be understood as an isolated technology talk. It set up a 46 lawnchair right on the crossroads of two growing crises: 47 48 1. The existential disruption of generative AI on software as craft, and 49 2. A deep, multi-year revolt within the Ruby ecosystem against DHH’s personal 50 politics, power concentration, cultural alienation, and let’s face it: he’s 51 become yet another techno-dick. 52 53 Abandoned by its own creator 54 55 In his hour on stage, DHH barely mentioned the technology the audience had 56 gathered to celebrate. In fact, an AI transcript analysis by a commenter 57 revealed that the word “Ruby” was spoken just 11 times throughout the entire 58 presentation. 59 60 Instead, DHH unveiled a series of radical repudiations of the doctrines he 61 spent two decades embedding into software canon: 62 63 “Pencils Down” on manual code. DHH announced that 37signals has banned 64 hand-written code as standard operating procedure. Hand-writing code is now 65 treated as a failure state. He also declared, “I have retired from being a 66 professional programmer,” and that English is now his favorite programming 67 language. He said that in the past year, only ~3% of the code he produced was 68 Ruby. This. could be a hard pill to swallow for a community that had a tenet 69 called [20]“Exalt beautiful code”. 70 71 Ditching the web app. For 20 years, DHH championed server-rendered web 72 applications, HTML over the wire, and the [21]“Majestic Monolith”. At the 73 keynote, he announced that 37signals’ flagship email client, HEY, is abandoning 74 the web app model entirely. Armed with agentic code generators, a small team 75 was tasked with pumping out six native desktop and mobile applications 76 simultaneously. 77 78 Black-box Rust backends. Admitting he despises Rust (“like pouring acid in my 79 eyes”, “inhumane to ask people of flesh and blood to subject their eyeballs 80 to”), DHH celebrated outsourcing the entire HEY backend to AI agents writing 81 Rust. His justification was rooted in total detachment: he never has to read or 82 maintain it. It functions purely as an opaque black box. 83 84 The “loser” ultimatum. Dismissing concerns over job displacement, intellectual 85 property theft, or code maintainability, DHH commanded the room to “take the 86 white pill” and embrace extreme acceleration (the 2026 version of “move fast 87 and break things”). His parting assessment for anyone feeling cautious or 88 skeptical about turning software development into black-box agent 89 orchestration: “The black pill is for fucking losers. Don’t be a loser.” 90 91 (The most extreme example: [22]that two-hour unedited Primeagen interview with 92 DHH from 2024. Caffeinated baboons would’ve been less noisy.) 93 94 Alienating the audience 95 96 To understand why this keynote felt less like bold leadership and more like a 97 betrayal, you have to look at the cultural fracture that preceded it. 98 99 In a poignant, widely read November 2025 reflection, In Praise of DHH, 100 long-time developer (and my friend) Filipa MV captured the tragic arc of DHH’s 101 relationship with the community: 102 103 “Prologue. I never met him, but I liked him. He was cool. He could be 104 arrogant, and brash. He was maybe a little too self-satisfied. But on the 105 whole I would say he was someone I admired, someone I looked up to. He was 106 a role model. David Heinemeier Hansson (aka dhh), indirectly, through the 107 creation of Ruby on Rails and the community that sprung up around it, had a 108 big impact on my life… Rails was the connective tissue that threaded 109 together many meaningful friendships of mine.” 110 111 As Filipa noted, many in the community historically tolerated DHH’s arrogance 112 because of his undeniable taste and track record: “I have always liked David’s 113 technical leadership! I have historically thought that he’s right more often 114 than he’s wrong!” 115 116 Yet, as documented across the ecosystem, from Filipa’s essay to David Celis’s 117 The DHH Problem, to Tekin Süleyman’s The Ruby Community Has a DHH Problem, DHH 118 made a JK Rowling-like slide from a brash, opinionated visionary into a 119 reactionary figure engaged in institutional power games: 120 121 The culture war shift. In recent years, DHH turned his public channels toward 122 culture-war grievances: railing against DEI, adopting anti-trans talking 123 points, praising far-right British agitators like Tommy Robinson, and 124 describing London’s multicultural demographics as a “nightmare.” For a global 125 community founded on the Ruby ethos of MINASWAN (“Matz is nice and so we are 126 nice“), watching the titular figurehead of Rails embrace xenophobic tropes and 127 exclusion felt like an assault on the community’s foundational spirit. 128 129 Power and institutional captivity. When community members and contributors 130 pushed back, they discovered that DHH had architected a structure where he 131 could not be held accountable. Between controlling the Rails trademarks, 132 chairing the Rails Foundation, dominating Rails Core alongside Basecamp and 133 Shopify (who also have a problematic leader), and exerting leverage over events 134 (such as the contentious Ruby Central and RubyGems funding dramas of 2025), DHH 135 built, as Filipa MV observed, “a world where people can’t say no to him.” 136 137 The Eeection of the community. When DHH told his Rails World audience not to be 138 “losers,” it confirmed what critics had warned: the empathy was gone. To quote 139 Filipa MV: “He has great technical taste but he is not a good leader… To have 140 him keynote and hold a veto over the community is to say to people like me, and 141 brown-skinned people everywhere, ‘you don’t belong here.’” 142 143 “Feel the fucking room, ffs” and the revolt in the comments section 144 145 DHH probably intended his keynote to be an exhilarating, Steve Ballmer-style 146 “Oh, what a time to be alive!” rally. The public reception in the conference 147 hall and across the YouTube comment section was characterized by shock, grief, 148 and exhaustion. 149 150 The “conference tax” vs. the pitch. Attendees and remote viewers quickly noted 151 the absurdity of paying premium ticket, travel, and lodging fees for a Rails 152 conference only to be told that Rails is an afterthought and programming is 153 dead: 154 155 “I attended Euruko a few days ago… Matz talked about tech. I feel sorry for 156 everyone who bought a ticket and ‘has’ to be there to endure the rest of 157 what’s coming.” 158 159 “Came here for Rails, got told I’m a loser in the shadows lol.” 160 161 “Imagine being a speaker following this talk and having to talk about Rails 162 after DHH dumped it for Rust.” 163 164 Wealthy techie vs working techie. Commenters drove home the stark class divide 165 between a multi-millionaire founder playing with unlimited API tokens and 166 everyday developers navigating a brutal tech market and a rising cost of 167 living: 168 169 “He’s a multimillionaire talking to a room of people who still need a 170 paycheck for the next 30 years. He has his bag, of course he’s excited. 171 He’s got nothing to lose like the rest of us.” 172 173 “The problem is not really that AI will end careers, the problem is that 174 the people who will end it are trying to convince you to be happy about it… 175 Feel the fucking room, ffs.” 176 177 The knowledge freeze and architectural decay. For years, DHH and 37signals 178 marketed themselves as the ultimate defenders of digital sovereignty. They led 179 the charge on leaving the public cloud (“Cloud Exit”), crusaded against Apple’s 180 App Store tax, championed self-hosted SQLite, and preached independence from 181 Silicon Valley oligarchs. 182 183 Yet at Rails World 2026, that posture inverted entirely: 184 185 • From sovereignty to model rent-seeking: The software pipeline was 186 surrendered to centralized model providers like Anthropic and OpenAI. As 187 one commenter observed: “Rails World 2025: End to end freedom. Rails World 188 2026: Just depend on other companies.” 189 • From craft to disposable slop: Software is no longer a well-tended garden 190 engineered for human delight and maintainability. It’s now an unread, 191 disposable byproduct generated in mass volume. To cite the work of another 192 techno-dick: We are now the pointy-haired bosses from Dilbert. 193 • Cannibalizing his own moat: If an email client, a desktop utility, or a 194 SaaS backend can be vibecoded in 20 minutes from plain English prompts, the 195 economic justification for 37signals vanishes. Why pay a monthly SaaS 196 subscription to HEY or Basecamp when an agent can compile a custom personal 197 client directly to native bytecode? 198 199 The end of an era 200 201 Programming languages and frameworks are like Freddy Kruger or Jason Voorhees; 202 they’re hard to kill and live longer than expected. 203 204 Ruby on Rails won’t vanish overnight. Thousands of monoliths power the backbone 205 of global businesses, and Ruby’s and Rails’ expressive designs will always 206 offer genuine joy to developers who care about the craft of programming. 207 208 But something did die on the keynote stage in Austin: the social contract 209 between the framework and its creator. For years, developers looked the other 210 way during DHH’s controversies because he remained the ultimate champion of 211 developer ergonomics, craftsmanship, and the indie hacker’s right to build 212 elegant software. 213 214 By taking the stage at Rails World to declare coding obsolete, dismiss Ruby as 215 a relic, flaunt unreadable Rust generated by third-party black boxes, and label 216 his own audience “losers” for caring about their craft, DHH finalized a break 217 that had been brewing for years. 218 219 Rails may endure, but its original architect has officially left the building. 220 It’s now up to the community to decide whether it continues to chain itself to 221 an alienated founder, or finally gather the courage to build a post-DHH future. 222 223 Postscript 224 225 [why-non-conformist-certificate] 226 227 [26]why the lucky stiff, where are you when we need you? 228 229 Post-postscript 230 231 [27][so-much-better]Monday, September 28, 2026: [28]Fortunately, the closing 232 keynote’s vibe was so, so different. 233 234 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 235 [29] ← Saturday picdump for Saturday, September 26 [30] → Aaron Patterson’s 236 closing keynote (and antidote to the DHH funeral) at Rails World 2026: “Get in 237 loser, we’re going programming” 238 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 239 240 Recent Posts 241 242 • [31]My DevRelCon NYC 2026 talk: “The Market is Trying to Tell You 243 Something” 244 • [32]Saturday picdump for Saturday, October 3 245 • [33]Tampa Bay tech, entrepreneur, and nerd events list (Monday, October 5 – 246 Sunday, October 11) 247 • [34]Ziti TV Oct 2 2026 – LLM Gateway meets the OpenZiti Appetizer! 248 • [35]99% of orgs are PLANNING microsegmentation, but only 9% have followed 249 through 250 • [36]How NOT to promote an AI initiative 251 • [37]Trump’s executive order to rebrand “AI” as “SI” 252 • [38]Super Cyber Friday: “Hacking Microsegmentation for Machine Workloads” 253 (or: Old cybersecurity tricks don’t work with new AI agents)) 254 • [39]North/south vs. east/west (or: Where the security budget goes vs. where 255 the attacker *actually* moves) 256 • [40]The first in a new walkthrough series: Add a working classifier to the 257 Appetizer and host it as a dark service! 258 • [41]Aaron Patterson’s closing keynote (and antidote to the DHH funeral) at 259 Rails World 2026: “Get in loser, we’re going programming” 260 • [42]DHH’s opening keynote at Rails World 2026: “The most confusing funeral 261 I’ve ever experienced” 262 • [43]Saturday picdump for Saturday, September 26 263 • [44]Tampa Bay tech, entrepreneur, and nerd events list (Monday, September 264 28 – Sunday, October 4) 265 • [45]“You will never patch fast enough” (or: 5 days to exploit, 32 days to 266 patch, and why better triage doesn’t close that) 267 268 Recent Comments 269 270 • Reagan on [46]How Many Digits of pi Do You Know?
